What are My Rights as an Employee?

As a Long Beach employee, you have several rights that protect you from workplace issues. Knowing your rights gives you an upper hand when dealing with employee-employer disputes. The rights include but are not limited to:

Right to File a Complaint

Suppose your employer has harassed or retaliated against you or a coworker. In that case, you can file a complaint with a government agency such as DFEH (California Department of Fair Employment and Housing).

Right to Fair Pay

You are entitled to receive the minimum wage set by the state. In addition, your employer must compensate you overtime pay (1.5 times the regular rate) for hours worked over 8 in a day or 40 in a week. You can file a complaint against wage disputes if this does not happen.

Right to Protection for Whistleblowing

If you have reported a legal violation to government agencies, you are protected under California’s whistleblower laws.

Right to Take Eligible Leaves

If eligible, you can take various leaves, including family and medical leave, pregnancy disability leave, and paid sick leave.

Right to Receiving a Proper Explanation

Suppose you were wrongfully terminated without a valid reason or notice (as mentioned in your employment contract). In that case, you can question your employer or file a complaint against the wrongdoing.
